Bio

Merlin was born on August 21, 1927, in Wisconsin. He attended St. Peter’s Lutheran Grade School and continued his education at Reedsburg High School until the 10th grade, when he left to work on the family farm.
Merlin was drafted into the military on October 23, 1950. After six months of basic training, he was deployed to Korea with the 24th Infantry Division, 5th Regimental Combat Team. On his first day in combat, April 23, 1951, Merlin was captured and became a prisoner of war for 27 months. He was returned to military control on August 16, 1953, and discharged from service on October 21, 1953. Upon returning home, Merlin was honored as the Parade Marshal in celebration of the end of the Korean War.
