SS: Ναι, έβγαλα το Δημοτικό. Αλλά όταν ήμουν στην 6η Τάξη, ήρθαν οι Γερμανοί. Και κάναμε τρεις μήνες μάθημα, και μετά το σχολείο το πήραν οι Γερμανοί. Και μας προβίβασαν όλους, ύστερα από αυτούς τους τρεις μήνες που κάναμε στην 6η Τάξη.

SS: Yes, I graduated from elementary school. But when I was in 6th grade, the Germans came. And we had lessons for three months, and then the Germans took the school. And they promoted us all, after these three months we did, in the 6th Grade.

SS: Κάναμε πενήντα ημέρες ταξίδι. Ήμασταν 13 ημέρες στο καράβι και παίζει η σειρήνα και λέει όλοι οι Έλληνες στρατιώτες να βγουν στην πλώρη. Και βγήκαμε πάνω και μας λέει ο διοικητής ότι ήμασταν η πιο καλή αποστολή, η πιο τυχερή αποστολή της Κορέας, γιατί έγινε ανακωχή. Κι αφού έγινε ανακωχή, θα συνεχίσει η ανακωχή και ο πόλεμος σταμάτησε.

We traveled for fifty days. We were on the boat for 13 days and the siren sounds and says all the Greek soldiers to go out on the bow. And we went upstairs and the commander tells us that we were the best mission, the luckiest mission in Korea, because there was a truce. And after a truce was made, the truce will continue and the war stopped.

 

Translator: He describes about the trip to Korea, that when they were approaching Busan, the commander of the Battalion told them that this mission is very lucky because there is no war to face.

SS: Όταν πήγαμε και βγήκαμε από το καράβι, μας πήραν τα James. Εγώ μπήκα σε ένα μαύρο. Πήγαμε στο βουνό. Και στο βουνό εκεί που πήγαμε, ήταν λέει πιο πριν οι Βέλγοι και το ονόμασαν Βέλγικο Τάγμα.

When we went and got off the boat, James took us. I got into a black one. We went to the mountain. And on the mountain where we went, the Belgians were there before and they named it the Belgian Battalion.

 

Translator: Δεν θυμόσαστε ποιο βουνό ήταν; Ποιος λόφος;

Can’t you remember which mountain it was? Which hill?

 

SS: Όχι. Αλλά περάσαμε έναν ποταμό και ήταν έξι βάρκες δεμένες, και πάνω στις έξι βάρκες είχαν μαδέρια. Και περνούσαν πάνω από τα μαδέρια τα James.

No. But we crossed a river and there were six moored boats, and there were planks on the six boats. And James were passing over the planks.

Translator: Το 2020 θα έχουμε τα 70 χρόνια από την έναρξη του Κορεατικού πολέμου. Έχετε να πείτε κάτι γι’ αυτό το θέμα;

In 2020, we will have the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. Do you have anything to say about this?

 

SS: Εύχομαι να πάνε όλα καλά, όπως κι αυτοί επιθυμούν να είναι ειρηνική η ζωή για όλον τον κόσμο. Και πρώτα για τους Νοτιοκορεάτες, που πήραν μεγάλο στραπάτσο, όπως κι εμείς το 1940-44.

I wish them all the best, as they wish life to be peaceful for the whole world. And first for the South Koreans, who had a big destruction, like us in 1940-44.
