INTERVIEWER: Dígame su nombre completo, dónde y cuándo nació, y hábleme algo de su familia.  De sus padres, de sus hermanos, cuántos eran, de qué trabaja su padre, ¿entiende?  Pero comience con su nombre y dónde y cuándo nació.

INTERVIEWER: Tell me your full name, where and when you were born, and tell me about your family. About your parents, your brothers, how many you were, what was your father’s work, do you understand? But start with your name and where and when your were born.

SERRANO-BELEN: Bueno el nombre mío es Luis Antonio Serran-Belén.  Nací en Sabana Grande, el marzo 8 de ’31.  ¿Y qué más?  

SERRANO-BELEN: Well my name is Luis Antonio Serran-Belen. I was born in Sabana Grande, on March 8, ’31. And what else?

I: Algo de su familia.  

I: Something about your family.  

SB: Pues,  mi papá y mi mamá vivían en Sabana Grande.  De ahí nos mudamos para Mayaguez. Primero vivimos en la carretera vieja que va de Mayaguez a Sabana Grande.  

SB: Well, my father and mother lived in Sabana Grande. From there we moved to Mayaguez. First we lived on the old highway that goes from Mayaguez to Sabana Grande.

SB: Vivimos por dónde pasaba el  tren  allí. . . en la carretera vieja que venía de Cabo Rojo por acá.  Vivimos allí un montón de tiempo y yo estudié en la Escuela [Sabananeas].  Que iba a pié por ahí pa’ allá.  Descalzo por allí, bendito.  En aquellos años los papás no podían.

SB: We lived where the train passed. . . on the old highway that came from Cabo Rojo to here. We lived there a long time and I studied at the [Sabananeas] School. I would walk by foot from here to over there. Barefoot around there, what a shame.  But in those years the parents struggled.

SB: Y yo íba descalzo hasta la Escuela Sabananeas que eso era lejos por allá.  Sí.

SB: And I went barefoot to the Sabananeas School, that was far away over there. Yes.

I: ¿Cuántos hermanos eran?  

I: How many siblings were there?

SB: Nosotros fuimos cinco hermanos. Hermanas y hermanos.

SB: We were five siblings. Sisters and brothers.

I: ¿Y tuvo otros hermanos que sirvieron en la guerra?

I: And did you have other brothers who served in the war?

SB: No.

SB: No.

I: ¿Usted fue el único?

I: You were the only one?

SB: Sí, en la guerra, sí.  Yo fui el único.

SB: Yes, in the war, yes. I was the only one.

I: ¿Y hasta qué grado estudio?

I: And until what grade did you study?

SB: Hasta cuarto grado.

SB: Until fourth year high school.

I: ¿Antes de entrar al Ejército?

I: Before entering the Army?

SB: Sí, sí.

SB: Yes, yes.

I: ¿Comó usted llegó al Ejército? ¿Usted fue de voluntario o lo llamaron? 

I: How did you end up in the Army? Did you volunteer or were you drafted?

SB: A mi me llamaron.  Me llamaron, sí.

SB: They called me. I was drafted, yes.

I: ¿Cuándo fue eso y cuántos años tenía? 

I: When was that and how old were you?

SB: Eso fue en el ’52.  Yo nací en el ’31. Y en el ’52 pues había cómo veintipicos de años.

SB: That was in ’52. I was born in ’31. And in ’52, I was about twenty-something years old.

I: ¿Qué opinión tenía usted cuando lo llamaron?  ¿Usted sabe por qué lo llamaron?

I: What was your opinion when they drafted you? Do you know why they drafted you?

SB: No.

SB: No.

I: ¿No  sabía de la guerra de Corea?  ¿Qué había comenzado?  ¿No sabía nada de Corea?

I: You didn’t know about the Korean War?  That it had started?  You didn’t know anything about Korea?

SB: Bueno, yo sabía algo de Corea porque siempre daban noticias y eso.

SB: Well, I knew something about Korea because they always reported the news and forth.

I: ¿Qué sabía? 

I: What did you know? 

SB: Pues, que era una guerra fuerte.  Yo fui allá.  Desde San Juan allá nos echamos cincuenticinco días en barco.

SB: Well, that it was a difficult  war. I went there. From San Juan to there it took us fifty-five days by ship.

SB: Pasamos por el canal de Panamá.  Fuimos por ahí. . . Hawaii. . . Japón, hasta llegar a Corea. Cincuenticinco días en barco.  Caminote ese, ¿verdad?

SB: We passed through the Panama Canal. We went from there. . . to Hawaii. . . Japan, until we arrived in Korea. Fifty-five days by ship. A long distance, right?

I: ¿Y cuándo usted llegó a Corea, a cuál compañía y unidad lo asignaron?  ¿Y cuál era su responsabilidad, su especialidad? 

I: And when you got to Korea, to which company and unit were you assigned? And what was your responsibility, your specialty?

SB: Cincuenticinco — el Regimiento 55 de Infantería.

SB: Fifty-fifth — 55th Infantry Regiment.

I: ¿65. . . 65? 

I: 65th. . . 65th? 

SB: El 65.  

SB: The 65th.  

I: ¿Dígame eso de nuevo y en cuál compañía? 

I: Tell me that again and to which company?

SB: El Regimiento 65 de Infantería. 

SB: The 65th Infantry Regiment. 

I: ¿En cuál compañía? 

I: To which company? 

SB: La  compañía no me acuerdo.

SB: I don’t remember the company.

I: Okay.  ¿No se acuerdo más o menos cuándo llegó a Corea, el mes y el año?  ¿’52, ’53?

I: Okay.  Do you remember more or less when you arrived in Korea, the month and year?  ’52, ’53?

SB: En el ’53.

SB: In ’53.

I: ¿Usted llegó a Corea?

I: When you arrived in Korea?

SB: Sí, sí.

SB: Yes, yes.

I: ¿Y usted era infantero?

I: And were you an infantryman?

SB: ¿Infantero es. . .?

SB: What is an infantryman. . .?

I: “Infantryman”. 

I: Infantryman. 

SB: Sí.  En la línea de batalla. Yo era “squad leader” allí también. Yo mandaba a hacer las cosas.

SB: Yes. On the front lines. I was a squad leader there too. I ordered them to do things. 

I: ¿Esa fue la primera vez que salió de Puerto Rico, verdad?

I: That was the first time you had left Puerto Rico, right?

SB: Sí, la primera.

SB: Yes, the first time.

I: ¿Y cuál fue su impresión de Corea?  ¿Qué piensa de Corea?

I: And what was your impression of Korea? What do you think of Korea?

SB: Pues, m’hija, tanto revolú que había por allá.   

SB: Well, my child, there was so much trouble over there.

I: ¿Qué pensaba del país, del clima, de la gente, del terreno? ¿Qué piensa?

I: What did you think of the country, the climate, the people, the terrain? What do you think?

SB: La temperatura muy baja. . . frío aquello. . . se congelaba uno allí.  Tremendo.  A mí se me congelaron unos cuantos allí.  Yo era “squad leader” en la guerra.  Yo era él que mandaba a hacer las cosas allí en el grupo.  

SB: The temperature was very low. . . that cold. . . one would freeze there. Tremendous. A few of my men froze there. I was a squad leader  in the war. I was the one who ordered things to be done there in the group.

I: ¿Sí?

I: Yes?

SB: Sí.  Y se me congelaron unos cuantos.  

SB: Yes.  And a few of them froze.  

I: ¿Se murieron?

I: Did they die?

SB: Bueno, se me congelaron tres. . .   

SB: Well, three of mine froze. . .

SB: . . . de los que yo tenía en la escuadra.  Y yo dije, “Contra, que voy a hacer yo ahora?: ¿Verdad?  Porque me daba pena dejarlos allí.  Y se me salió en la mente rápido, haber si le salía un calorcito de la nariz.  Si le sale un calcorcito es que está todavía vivo porque está respirando.  Y de ellos, habían dos que estaban así.

SB: . . . that I had in the squad. And I said, “Wow, what am I going to do now?” You know? Because I was sorry to leave them there. And it occurred to me quickly to see if there was any warmth coming out of the nose. If a little warmth comes out it means he is still alive because he is breathing. And of them, there were two who were like this.

SB: Y había uno que no le salía  na’. ¿Pues que voy a hacer?  Yo no los puedo llevar ahora a los tres. Pues, mandé a coger a dos de mi  grupo y me los llevaron pa’ allá.  Y el otro que para mí estaba muerto ya, pues, le deje allí.  No podía hacer más na’. Y yo espero que se haya muerto porque — que estuviera muerto porque con aquel frío que hacía. . .  Congelado, ¿imagínate?

SB: And there was one that nothing came out.  Well, what was I going to do?  I couldn’t take all three at once. Well, I ordered that two from the group be taken and they took them over there. And the other one who already seemed dead to me, well, I  left him there. I couldn’t do anything else. And I hope he died because — that he was dead because with the cold that there was. . . Frozen, can you imagine?

SB: Gracias al Señor, pues pude salvar a esos. 

SB: Thank God, well, I was able to save those. 

I: ¿Y sabe si sobrevivieron esos dos?

I: Do you know if they survived?

SB: Bueno, yo los llevé para allá y ahí se lo llevaron a otro sitio pero no supe más de ellos. No informan nada. 

SB: Well, I took them there and there they took them to another place but I didn’t know anything more about them. They don’t inform anything.

I: ¿Y entonces del tiempo que estuvo allá en Corea, hay alguna batalla en particular, un incidente que todavía se acuerda qué fue o bien peligrosa o que le impactó?

I: And then from the time you were there in Korea, is there a particular battle, an incident that you still remember that was either dangerous or that impacted you?

SB: Sí. 

SB: Yes. 

I: ¿Cómo cuál?

I: Like which?

SB: Pues, cuando nos dispararon que me mataron a dos de los grupos mío.

SB: Well, when they shot at us, they killed two from my group.

I: Échese pa’ atrás que se salió de la. . . comience otra vez.  Ahora.

I: Lean back because you got out of the. . . please start again. Go ahead.

 

SB: Que cuando me mataron a dos del  grupo mío y otros que estaban congelados por el frío que hacía, pues, yo tuve que remolcar los que para mí estaban vivos.  Porque le salía un poquito de calor todavía de la nariz.

SB: When they killed two from my group and others who were frozen because of the cold, well, I had to move those whom to me were still alive. Because a little warmth was still coming out of the nose.

SB: Al que no le salía, pues, yo dije “¿Qué voy a hacer?”  No puedo hacer más na’. Pero me los llevé dos remolcao por ahí pa’ bajo hasta llevarlos a las líneas fuera.  De ahí, nunca más supe de ellos.

SB: For the one that nothing came out, well, I said “What am I going to do?”  I can’t do anything else. But I towed two of them until we arrived at the lines outside. From there, I never heard from them again.

I: ¿Pero qué misión peligrosa fue la que tuvo ahí? ¿O tuvo otra? ¿ La más peligrosa donde estuvo?.

I: But what dangerous mission was the one you had there? Or did you have another? Which was the most dangerous you had?  

SB: ¿La más peligrosa?  Bueno, cuando yo tenía que mandar a matar allí. . . a matar gente.

SB: The most dangerous? Well, when I had to order to kill there. . . to kill people.

SB: Yo tenía que hacerlo mandar a matar. Porque nos íban a matar a nosotros si no los matábamos. Y los muchachos que yo tenía en el grupo, como que no se atrevían matarlos. Y yo tenía que darle las órdenes pero gritándoselo.  “Hay que matarlos porque nos van a matar a nosotros.”  Yo tiraba y ellos tenían que tirar también.

SB: I had to order to kill. Because they were going to kill us if we didn’t kill them. And the boys I had in the group, like they didn’t dare kill them. And I had to give them the orders but yelling at them. “You have to kill them because they are going to kill us.” I was shooting and they had to shoot too.

I: ¿Pero eran soldados enemigos o eran del pueblo?

I: But were they enemy soldiers or from the town?

SB: ¿Los que venían? 

SB: The ones who came?

I: ¿Los que mataban?

I: The ones you killed?

SB: ¿Los que. . .? 

SB: The ones. . .? 

I: ¿Los que a usted tenía que matar eran soldados enemigos o eran. . .?

I: The ones that you had to kill were enemy soldiers or. . .?

SB: No, eran enemigos. 

SB: No, they were enemy. 

I: ¿Enemigos?

I: Enemy?

SB: Sí, de la guerra.  Como estamos unos allá y otros acá.  Que son los que estamos — pues, eran los enemigos de nosotros. 

SB: Yes, from the war. Since some of us were there and others were here. Who are the ones that we are — well, they were our enemies.

I: ¿Y los soldados suyo no querían matarlos?

I: And your soldiers did not want to kill them?

SB: Y no querían.  No se atrevían.  Y yo le dije “Pero hay que matarlos porque nos van a matar a nosotros.”  ¡Muchacho. . . gritándole!  Hasta que lo hicieron. Si no nos matan. Y yo se lo decía así gritándoselo.

SB: And they didn’t want to. They did not dare. And I said “But you have to kill them because they are going to kill us.” Boy. . . yelling at them! Until they did. If not they will kill us. And I told them so yelling at them.

SB: Hasta que ayudaron. Gracias a Dios, padre nuestro.  No es que yo me alegre haberlos matados  pero si no los matamos nosotros,  nos van a matar ellos a nosotros.  Eso es así.

SB: Until they helped. Thank God, lord. It is not that I was happy to have killed them, but if we did not kill them, they would kill us. That’s how it is.

I: ¿Y el idioma inglés, usted no tuvo problema allá en Corea? ¿Hablaba inglés?

I: And the English language, you had no problem there in Korea? Did you speak English?

SB: No mucho.  

SB: Not much.  

I: ¿Cómo usted se comunicaba con los oficiales?

I: How did you communicate with the officers?

SB: Un poquito de inglés que yo hablaba, nos comunicábamos. Pero también yo me comunicaba en español también.

SB: A little bit of English that I spoke, we communicated. But also I communicated in Spanish too.

I: ¿Y los oficiales lo trataron bien?

I: And did the officers treat you well?

SB: Muy bien. Sí, muy bien.  

SB: Very well.  Yes, very well.  

I: ¿No tuvo problemas con ellos?

I: You did not have problems with them?

SB: No, no. Muy bien.  Como yo me porté muy bien también en el campo de batalla, pues ellos me ayudaron mucho.  

SB: No, no. Very well. Since I behaved very well also on the battlefield, well they helped me a lot.

I: ¿Usted se acuerda los nombres de los lugares dónde fue a Corea?  ¿No se acuerda los nombres?

I: Do you remember the names of the places where you went to Korea? Do you remember the names?

SB: Eh, el valle de Chorwon.

SB: Uh, Chorwon Valley.

I: ¿El valle de Chorwon?

I: Chorwon Valley?

SB: El valle de Chorwon.  Ahí. . . ese es el  más que me acuerdo.  Valle Chorwon.

SB: Chorwon Valley.  There. . . that’s the one I most remember.  Chorwon Valley.

I: ¿Cuánto tiempo en total usted estuvo en Corea?

I: What was the total time you were in Korea?

SB: Yo estuve como un año y pico. . . por allá.  

SB: I was there for about a year and half.. . . over there.  

I: Eso es mucho tiempo.

I: That’s a lot of time.

SB: Sí.  Año y pico.

SB: Yes.  A year and so.

I: ¿Y cuándo regresó de Corea?  Aproximadamente.  ¿No sabe?

I: And when did you return from Korea?  Approximately.  Do you know?

SB: Bueno, no me acuerdo ahora mismo la fecha.  

SB: Well, I can’t recall the date right now.  

I: ¿No se acuerda?

I: You don’t remember?

SB: Eso fue hace tiempo. . . un montón de años atrás.

SB: That was so long ago. . . a bunch of years ago.

I: Sí.  ¿Cuándo usted regresó a Puerto Rico usted  tuvo problemas ajustándose?  ¿Lo que le pasó allá le impactó cuando regresó?

I: Yes. When you returned to Puerto Rico did you have problems adjusting? Did what happened to you there impact you when you returned?

SB: No.  No porque como uno está acostumbrao’ ya al revolú y cosas.  

SB: No. No because you get accustomed to the chaos and things.

SB: Y cuando llegué acá la tranquilidad era mucho mejor.

SB: And when I got here the tranquility was much better.

I: ¿No tuvo pesadillas, no tuvo problemas ajustándose, verdad?

I: You didn’t have nightmares, you didn’t have trouble adjusting, did you?

SB: No.

SB: No.

I: Párese que se está saliendo de la cámara.  Ahí.  Dígame eso de nuevo que no tuvo problema.

I: Please straighten up because you’re getting out of the camera.  There. Tell me again that you had no problem...

SB: ¿Qué no tuve problema en el regreso?  No. Estuvimos bien y cuando llegamos acá, pues. . . lo único era los recuerdos que uno. . . que no se le van de la mente a uno porque, ¿imagínate?

SB: That I had no problem upon returning? No. We were okay and when we got here, well. . . the only thing was the memories that did not leave your mind because, can you imagine?

SB: Pero, gracias a Dios, regresamos bien.  

SB: But, thank God, we returned all right.  

I: ¿Usted todavía se acuerda de esos tiempos?

I: Do you still remember those times?

SB: Sí. Cincuenticinco días viajando de San Juan a allá.

SB: Yes. Fifty-five days traveling from San Juan to there.

I: Tiempo largo.

I: A long time.

SB: Tiempo largo, sí. 

SB: A long time, yes. 

I: ¿Tiene en su mente en retrato de cómo se veía Corea entonces y sabe algo de cómo es Corea hoy?  ¿Usted sabe del progreso económico que ha tenido Corea hoy?

I: Do you have in your mind a portrait of what Korea looked like then and you know something of what Korea is like today? Do you know of the economic progress that Korea has made today?

SB: No. 

SB: No. 

I: ¿No sabe?  Usted sabe que es un país demócrata, ¿verdad? Que es demócratico.  Que Corea del Sur ha progresado. .

I: You do not know? You know it is a democratic country, right? That it is democratic. That South Korea has progressed. . .

SB: Ha progresado. . .

SB: It has progressed. . .

I: . . . tiene un ciudades modernas con rascacielos.

I: . . . it has modern cities and skyscrapers.

SB: Sí..

SB: Yes.

I: Es el país número once en la economía. . . de las mejores economías. . .

I: It’s a country ranked Number 11 in the economy. . .  of the best economies. . .

SB: ¿Sí?.

SB: Yes?.

I: ¿Y se acuerda como era Corea en el pasado, que estaba destrozado?  ¿Qué opinión tiene de ese Corea del pasado y el Corea de hoy? 

I: And do you remember what Korea was like in the past, that it was destroyed?  What is your opinion of that Korea of ​​the past and the Korea of ​​today?

SB: Como ahora el Corea de hoy yo no sé cómo estará. Pero antes aquello era, pues imagínate, que la guerra fue tan malo. Tan mala que fue la guerra. ¡Muchacho!

I: ¿Usted no tiene opinión de su participación como soldado en la guerra de Corea?  ¿Usted cree que valió la pena, que fue justa?  ¿Se arrepiente de algo?

SB: No.  Fue justo porque había que combatir los problemas que había entre los coreanos y los  americanos.  ¿Ves?  El revolú que había pues había que estar allí. Eso es normal. Imagínate si no hubiera eso, como sería eso. Habrían matado a todo el mundo. Pero nosotros ahí, gracias al Señor, fuimos y hicimos un buen trabajo.

SB: No. It was just because the problems between the Koreans and the Americans had to be fought. You see? Because of the chaos that was there then, we  had to be there. That is normal. Imagine if we hadn’t done that, what it would be like. They would have killed everyone. But there, thank the Lord, we went and did a good job.

I: ¿Quiere decir algún mensaje a las personas que estén viendo esta entrevista?  ¿Un comentario, un mensaje que quiera decirle sobre su participación como soldado en la guerra de Corea?

I: Do you want to send a message to the people who are watching this interview? A comment, a message you want to tell them about your participation as a soldier in the Korean War?

SB: Pues, lo importante de esto es que pude ir allá y en combatir. Yo era “squad leader” en la guerra.  Yo era él que mandaba a matar allí.  

SB: Well, the important thing about this is that I was able to go there and fight. I was a squad leader in the war. I was the one who had to order to kill there.

SB: Porque los muchachos no se atrevían matar.  Yo tenía que darle la orden hacerlo.  Y gente que se podrían al lado mío.  Compañeros que se mataban y podridos allí con esa peste. Pero, gracias al Señor, pudimos combatir bien y regresar a Puerto Rico de nuevo.

SB: Because the boys did not dare kill. I had to give him the order to do it. And there were people next to me rotting. Companions who were killed and were rotting there with that stench. But, thank the Lord, we were able to fight well and return to Puerto Rico again.

I: Gracias.
