Bio

Edward Conwisar was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Russian Jewish immigrant parents. Inspired by the service of his two older brothers in World War II, Edward answered his country’s call when he was drafted into the U.S. Army, joining an artillery unit in the 45th Infantry Division based in Oklahoma. In the spring of 1952, he was deployed to South Korea, where he courageously served on the front lines during the fierce Battle of Old Baldy. Edward recounted the intensity of firing relentless artillery barrages as Chinese forces advanced, and the harrowing experience of a friendly fire incident as the USAF tried to halt the enemy’s approach. He also spoke of the uplift in morale as Turkish troops passed through their position and the incredible extremes of weather the soldiers endured. Upon returning home, Edward faced the lasting sacrifice of permanent profound hearing loss from the concussive force of Howitzer cannons, requiring lifelong hearing aids—a testament to the price he paid in service. Edward’s story is a legacy of courage, resilience, and unwavering dedication to his country.
